Album Review: Just Pallin' Aroun' With by The Othermen
Disclaimer: This album review probably should not be called an "album review".
With regards to the "album" part, I do not yet, in fact, have a copy of the album. I was sent MP3s of the songs on the album by a friend of mine who is releasing the album on his record label (Killer Diller Records).
Also, this is not a review. It's really more of a sales pitch with a brief review tacked on (isn't honesty great?) See, I was given those MP3s and asked to write a blurb to promote the album. If the album stunk that would have been a problem. Fortunately it's really good stuff. I rated six of the eleven tracks five stars on my MP3 player, and none lower than three stars (average: 4.3 stars). The songs are so energetic that a couple of them made my workout playlist.
My only real complaint is that I'm not crazy about the sound of the electronic organ. The band has a carnival punk quality, so I'm sure the organ is supposed to sound chintzy. The MP3 compression might have had something to do with it as well. Still, it bugged me, and unfortunately two of the tracks are organ-led instrumentals. They're decent songs, but just not my thing.
Anyway, the album was impressive enough that I went ahead and wrote that blurb. Here's what I wrote:
"The Othermen are four experienced musicians who must've gotten sick of acting so grown-up all the time. Now they play tight, energetic tunes about their teenage obsessions: beer, pizza, girls, and just not giving a fuck about anything else. Never afraid of making a mess of things, their live shows often feature food fights and beer-spitting contests (sometimes for distance, sometimes for coverage). Even when they're singing about hating their ex, they are all about partying and having fun!
Sometimes albums by great live bands are big disappointments, but “Just Pallin' Aroun' With” really does capture the crazy energy of their live shows. Lead off track “I'm Drunk” will pick up anyone's spirits. You will want to jump around to ragers such as “Do The Max”, “I Don't Know Why”, and “She's Mine". This album contains no ballads, no experimental crap, and no ambient boring blah-de-blah. Just eleven intense and FUN rock-n-roll songs by The Othermen."
The Othermen want you to buy their album.
Or maybe the guy behind and to the left of you.
