Big Freedia at Brooklyn Bowl
There should be no question in anyone's mind about whether they like Big Freedia's music. Listen to one song and if you like it, then you'll like 'em all. The musical style is called "Bounce". While it is bouncy and you can definitely dance to it, variety is not its strong point. The question you should be asking yourself instead is "How much ass can I tolerate?" Apparently folks in New Orleans are either really into ass, or really into stretching. Feel free to decide for yourself.
The Reigning Sound at The Bell House
Unfortunately The Reigning Sound are very popular. I left the front of the stage for a few minutes to use the restroom and never got near it again. This a good half-hour before they went on! Oh well, here are fewer photos than I would have liked of an awesome band.
Baxx Sisi's at The Bell House
Amazingly I have never caught the Baxx Sisi's (formerly The Back C.C.s) at The Bell House. They play there all the time supporting bands like The Detroit Cobras and The Reigning Sound. While they still mostly play high-energy garage rock lately they have diversified a bit and added a funky song, an instrumental or two, and of course lead singer "Kick" Kikuchi rockin' that harmonica on a bluesy number. It's all badass rock-n-roll, just with a bit more variety than before.
Eternal Summers at Public Assembly
So many pop bands these days have that 80s sound. With a name like "Eternal Summers" I think these folks are well aware of how they sound. So since we're all solidly in an 80s mindset here I think I can safely say that Eternal Summers' drummer is rad. Yes. Rad. If you go to one of their shows do enjoy the catchy hooks and pretty melodies, but for the full nostalgic effect just watch the drummer the whole time. Okay, you can watch the wicked guitar playing too, but that's it!
The Immaculates at Brooklyn Bowl
Sure, every band has a lead singer, drummer, bassist, but when was the last time you saw a band with a butler? The Immaculates have someone to towel them off in between songs! This of course makes it easy for them to stay so, what's the word... pristine. Actually their bassist probably didn't break a sweat but that lead singer of theirs was all over the place, on the ground, jumping in the air, standing on the monitors and sitting on the amps. Great energy, fun show!
