Cult Of Youth at Live With Animals
It is almost time to say Farewell to Live With Animals, Monster Island, and the rest of the venues in the arts building on the corner of Kent and Metropolitan. Apparently Cult Of Youth refuse to leave. They played on this stage for the second time this month. Too uptempo to be goth, too dark to be folk, Cult Of Youth are like streams of day and night which mingle but do not completely mix. The visuals suited their sound nicely (but made it dang hard to take pictures!)
Vivian Girls at The Knitting Factory
I have only seen Vivian Girls twice, once at Webster Hall and once at Knitting Factory. Why is it that the lighting is so much better at the smaller venue? They sounded great at both, but c'mon WH, burn some electricity. Feel free to compensate by turning off that dang smoke machine. In fact, please turn off the smoke machine all the time. For the environment.
Widowspeak at The Knitting Factory
Having only seen Widowspeak's videos prior to seeing them live I was expecting something... mellower. Hell, let's be honest, I was expecting "easy listening", which is to say boring. Instead they turned out to be an actual rock band, more trippy than mellow, who mostly remind me of Love and Rockets. Oh, and in case you can't tell from the photos: no.
The Men at Saint Vitus
I definitely do not think these photos capture the intensity of the sonic pounding The Men delivered to crowd this night. Yes they are pretty intense (and yes they really are called The Men). I did overhear someone in the audience apologize to their friend for the lack of moshpit action, and sure enough there was very little of that. Could it be that the crowd was expecting even more from these guys?
The Bullys at Trash Bar
Finally! I saw these guys at CBGB's six years ago with The Nihilistics. Didn't catch the name of the band, though, so I only by chance happened to see them again last year. Then I missed most of their set with CJ Ramone when I went to see them earlier this year. Now, at last, I managed to catch the whole show and get some decent photos. Finally!
