Rock Lottery at The Knitting Factory
Now here's something a little different. A "Rock Lottery" is when a bunch of musicians are assigned to new bands at random and get 12 hours to write 3-5 songs and perform them. The songs were decent, but I think the main attraction is seeing musicians of different styles making music together. Or maybe it's seeing your favorite musicians play a different instrument, being allowed to sing for once, that sort of thing.
Sex Beet at The Knitting Factory
This is the second time I have photographed this band and I nearly decided not to post those photos this time too. They have some great songs, but only the lead singer/guitarist has any real stage presence. Remind you of any other bands I've posted photos of recently? (Hint: they were on the same bill)
Human Eye at The Knitting Factory
I could have sworn that Human Eye had a trombonist the last time I saw them, or some sort of brass instrument (he got in trouble at Magnetic Field for walking on the railing). You never know what to expect from these guys, as long as it can be done for cheap. I got glitter thrown on me, and beer (of course), and lead singer Timmy ate a flaming piece of paper.
Madam Robot and the Lust Brigade at The Knitting Factory
You have never heard anything like these folks and their strange but catch psych-pop. Unless of course you've heard them play before, which to be honest I had, but never at a venue like this. The crowd kept losing their mustaches due to all that head-bobbing. That combined with the lousy glue on the back of their fake mustaches.
Nobunny at The Knitting Factory
I knew this show would be good but WOW. There is no question that Nobunny is one of the most energetic and exciting performers around. There are however these other questions: How did two different people manage to lose one shoe each? Did they walk home afterwards? Perhaps they split a cab? Also, who is that woman? Is she a local? If so... hey Nobunny, she lives in NYC! So when did you say you were coming back again Nobunny?
Jacuzzi Boys at The Knitting Factory
You knew a band named Jacuzzi Boys would be from somewhere sunny (Florida, as it happens). I wonder if they are ever asked what a "jacuzzi" is by their Brooklyn fans? Especially fans of their sort of garage pop. Not really a "jacuzzi" sort of audience if you know what I mean.
Mucca Pazza at The Knitting Factory
The stage at The Knitting Factory is pretty big, but I still wasn't sure how Mucca Pazza was planning to fit on there. The band has 30+ members, after all. When they started out by mingling with the crowd I figured that at least some of them might stay there. In the end they did perform on stage, though a couple of 'em had a hard time staying on stage...
