Las Rosas at Mercury Lounge
Las Rosas are probably my favorite local band right now. Their combination of rock-n-roll energy and old-school pop catchiness is awesome enough, and their sense of humor makes them even better. Gotta love a song about panicking after you lose the cat you were supposed to be watching. Give them a listen on BandCamp and then go like them on Facebook, 'cause they're seriously under-appreciated.
Golden Animals at Mercury Lounge
Could've sworn these two sounded more hippie-ish once upon a time. Now they're dark and ominous, though still in a psychedelic way. Take a listen on SoundCloud or YouTube.
The Golden Grass at Mercury Lounge
The Golden Grass (the band) can be found on Facebook. I'm not telling you where to find the other kind.
Chrome Cranks at Mercury Lounge
The Chrome Cranks sound like the meanest, hardest blues group ever. Their intensity level varies from menacing ramble (on the mellow end!) to audience-crushing aggression. These particular photos may give you the impression that lead singer Peter Aaron is demonically possessed. I'm not gonna argue with that. It would explain a lot.
Hector's Pets at Mercury Lounge
Hector's Pets have been around for a year or two but I never managed to catch 'em. My first impressions was that these guys are so casual, it's like they just walked in off the street. Is that a pack of cigarettes on that hat? Their music reminds me of 70s hard rock (which I'm sure you never would have guessed by looking at them) though they did do one song towards the end which was milder and more catchy, a bit closer to a pop song. So they have a little bit of variety, but they're mostly about the nice loud rawk music.
