The Cambodian Space Project at The Rock Shop

I believe that only lead singer Srey Channthy of The Cambodian Space Project actually managed to get a visa, so technically this is her performing the band's songs. I have to say, though, this was a pretty sharp backing band. Aside from the fact that some of the instruments are missing they sounded like the real band.

Their sound has been called psychedelic, surf, and garage, and surely it is influenced by those styles. More than that they are part of a musical tradition which developed in Cambodia in the 60s and 70s and more or less died out (literally). Radio station WFMU's website has a lot more info and some mp3s you can listen to. The point is that these folks are the next generation, taking that Cambodian musical style forward.

The Foxx at The Rock Shop

Although this site is technically still on hiatus I figure I should post a few old photos which I never bothered to publish for whatever reason. The Foxx are a pop band with a hint of an edge. They were also the first band I ever photographed at The Rock Shop. The lighting there took a bit of getting used to so in my opinion the photos weren't great. Buuut there were a few which were decent... so here is a very sort photoset of The Foxx.

Ume at The Rock Shop

I'm sure that I have heard "indie" bands which sound something like Ume. Breathy female lead vocals over a growling rhythm are nothing new. But Ume does bring something a little different to the table, namely metal-like thrashing. On most songs lead singer Lauren Larson bangs her head and tears into her guitar like it's 1982. And to think, before the show I was wondering why she had four guitars prepped (she used all four).
