Stumblebum Brass Band at The Knitting Factory
Mohawks and brass instruments, eh? I did not know what to expect from these guys at all. I definitely didn't expect the trumpet player to strip naked. Anyway, drum and tuba sound a lot like drum and electric bass. Add singing and the occasional trumpet solo to that and you get something which sounds a bit like ska, a bit like psychobilly, and obviously more than a little bit punk. Worked for me.
Album Review: Just Pallin' Aroun' With by The Othermen
"With regards to the "album" part, I do not yet, in fact, have a copy of the album. I was sent MP3s of the songs on the album by a friend of mine who is releasing the album on his record label (Killer Diller Records)."
Primus at The Williamsburg Waterfront
I was amazed how much crowd surfing was going on during Primus's set. They never struck me as that kind of band. They're loud, but not like a metal or punk band. A lot of their songs are kind of slow and sludgy. So why were the security guys so busy from song #1? Perhaps the heat, or maybe the fact that it was an all-ages show? Crazy, crazy stuff.
The Pleasure Kills at Bruar Falls
I had been told that The Pleasure Kills were a "New Wave" band. Between the keyboardist and guitarists' hair I figured that was probably true. Now that I've heard them perform, I think not. They're more like proto-New Wave, that kind of punky, kind of poppy sound which evolved into that synth/disco sound which was more typical of New Wave music. Is that just a fancy way of saying they rocked? So be it.
